IN THE LANDS OF TOWERS AND WINE / 19-26.08 2023
Day 1 (August 19)
After picking up from the airport (around 1:00 pm depending on which city you are arriving from) near Kutaisi, exchanging money (from euros or dollars to lari), buying SIM cards we will go straight to the road towards Georgia's capital Tbilisi. Along the way we'll stop to grab a bite to eat, and then face a few hours in the car. But don't worry, there's plenty to see and admire along the way, you're sure to be delighted by the mountains in the distance, the otherworldliness of the villages we pass, cows on the streets or roadside stalls with homemade specialties. We'll pass the time with homemade wine, and in good spirits we'll reach Tbilisi, which is wonderfully lit up at night. Here we will have our first dinner and overnight stay.πΈ
Day 2 (August 20)
After breakfast we will set off for the Kakheti region, famous for its best wine-making traditions. It is here that wine is still produced in clay kvevri, stored in cellars called marani, as we will have the opportunity to see for ourselves. We will pass through the Gombori Pass that day, visiting the Shuamta Monastery. Finally, we will see the castle of King Erekle II, which is located in the regional capital of Telavi. We will walk through the streets of the city to end our day with a wine tasting and supra. Overnight in Telavi.π·
Day 3 (August 21)
This day our plan will be a long drive to the Tusheti region, but before we get there we will first see the Alaverdi Monastery in Kakheti. Then we will enter the most dangerous road in Georgia, leading through the Abano Pass (2900 m).The road is open only seasonally, usually from mid-June to October. The views will be breathtaking, but may also give you motion sickness. There will be serpentines, precipices, rushing streams, sheep on the roads, all laced with green mountains and meadows. Under such natural circumstances we will reach Omalo. We stay here for dinner and overnight.π»
Day 4 (August 22)
After breakfast we will set off in our minivan from Omalo to Dartlo. Here we will begin our horseback ride to the village of Kvavlo, the entire route will be only 4 km, but it will certainly provide a lot of excitement. Here we will visit the characteristic medieval defense towers, called baskets. Then we will go by car to the village of Parsma, here we will have a short trek in the surrounding hills, maybe a small picnic in the open air. The next place to visit is the village of Girevi. At the end of the day, we'll return to Dartlo, where a workshop on hinkali weaving, dinner and overnight await us at a local gesthous.π
Day 5 (August 23)
In the morning after breakfast we will leave Dartlo for the village of Bochorna, which is inhabited only in summer. Until a few years ago, Bochorna had the status of the highest village in Europe, but now, due to the death of its last year-round resident, this status has been taken away. From Bochorna we will go to the viewpoint to Dochu, an obligatory photo session at this place, to then reach Upper Omalo. Here we will be treated to a tour of Keselo Castle. For the night we will drive back to the Kakheti region, this time we will stay in Alvani.ποΈ
