Imereti-Racha
SUMMER ADVENTURE / 27.07-3.08 2023
Day 1 (July 27)
After picking up from the airport (around 1 pm depending on which city you are arriving from) near Kutaisi, exchanging money (from euros or dollars to lari), buying SIM cards we will head to the hot springs in Vani, where we will soak our tired bodies in the sulfuric water, have a snack, relax after the hardships of the journey. For the evening we will go to the village of Baghdati, here we will have dinner and overnight.ποΈ
Day 2 (July 28)
After breakfast we will set off towards the Sairme resort famous for its healing mineral waters, which we will have the opportunity to taste. It is here that Georgians come for therapeutic treatments, and we will take an unhurried stroll through the streets of the town. For those willing, for an additional fee, there is an opportunity to use the pool to cool off, after all, it is hot August. For the evening we will return to our gesthouse, where, in addition to dinner, a tasting of wines from the house cellar called marani will await us.π»
Day 3 (July 29)
In the morning we will leave towards the village of Katskhi. It is here that the famous monastery on the rock or Katskhi Pillar is located. The monastery, located on a 40-meter-high monolith, is impressive from a distance. Unfortunately, we will not be given the opportunity to climb the mountain, as the hermit living in the monastery is reluctant to receive visitors, but we will visit the monastery built at the foot of the monolith. After visiting Katskhi, we will travel back in time by visiting the post-Soviet city of Chiatura. Here time has stopped, and the city in its heyday famous for manganese mining is now decaying before our eyes. It may be a slightly depressing atmosphere, but it is also a part of Georgia and its history that we should not forget. We will have the opportunity to admire the industrial landscape from a height, from the perspective of the cable car that runs in the city. For dinner and overnight we stay in Chiatura.πΈ
Day 4 (July 30)
On this day we will get to the Racha region, called Georgian Switzerland because of the truly alpine views, but before that still in the Imereti area we will visit the Mgvimevi Monastery, and then go to the Akaki Tsereteli Museum. Akaki Tsereteli was a famous Georgian poet, writer, publicist, an important person for the Georgian nation, so it is worth learning about his history. On this day we will cross the Kikhati Pass located at an altitude of 2030 m. Kikhati Pass and visit the high-altitude village of Skhmeri (1720 m), and if it goes well we may be able to taste the area's specialty potrway skhmeruli (chicken in garlic sauce). For dinner and an overnight stay we will call at Oni.ποΈ
Day 5 (July 31)
We will start the day by visiting Stalin's summer residence in Shovi. This will be the start of a long day, as the mountain trail leading up to the Buba Glacier begins nearby. After so many monasteries, museums and architectural gems, it's finally time for some trekking. And the trekking will be anything but easy. Toward the glacier we have almost 7 km one way, in two it's already 14 km, and we still have to go back for the night. We will ascend to an altitude of 2500 meters above sea level and the difference in elevation is almost 950 meters up and then the same amount down, so although the route is not difficult it will not be easy. Be prepared for a full day on the trail. We will probably reach the village of Glola for the night (pending arrangements).π
Day 6 (August 1)
We will continue to spend this day in Racha, but this time on a leisurely and effortless basis. First we will go to the very important Nikortsminda monastery. This is a medieval Orthodox church with beautifully preserved frescoes and bas-reliefs.Here we will also purchase lobiani, a delicacy of the region in the form of a bean cake, and we will make our way to Shaori Lake to consume it. We'll get our feet wet from the previous day's weary trekking, maybe take a swim, and certainly rest before continuing our route. For the night we will go to the village of Satsire in Imereti.π
Day 7 (August 2)
After breakfast, on our way to visit the UNESCO World List site of Gelati Monastery, followed by the tiny Motsameta Monastery, located in a very charming natural setting. From here it's not far to Kutaisi. Here we will go to the famous bazaar, where you can buy Georgian delicacies and souvenirs. Then we will see Bagrati Cathedral, the city center with the Kolchida Fountain, the White and Red Bridges over the Rioni River, Amusement Park, where for those willing there will be an opportunity to take a gondola lift with a panoramic view of the city.
